its rare that we lose so much in such a short time.
i watched the funeral of Coretta Scott King yesterday. The usual suspects were there. everyone stood appropriately with their hands clasped in front of them except W. He looked like an autistic child. and he got his ass handed to him. at the funeral of an incredibly dignified woman.
thats a real badge of assholedom.
the overwhelming message was..."you have no business being on this stage. It is only out of politeness that you are here at all" the other message to him was "everything she believed in and worked for her whole life is the opposite of what you have wrought on this world"
Joe Lowry was brilliant. saying flat out "She extended Martin's message against poverty racism and war. She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar. We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there. But -- but Coretta knew and we know that they were weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For billion are more, but no more for the poor. " and looked right at Bush jr. that was the first moment in the entire ceremony that his stupid mug was not visible in the bottom right corner of the screen since he was seated behind the podium. his babysitters, it seemed were smart enough to get him out of the line of fire so he didn't do anything stupid like a make a face into the camera for all the world to see. (I would have linked to the transcripts of Joe Lowry on cnn but they are 'oddly' absent. the speech before and the speech after are there but Joe's is missing. strange.)
i kept waiting for W to give Maya Angelou the "rabbit ears" behind her head.
Atlanta's Mayor, Shirley Franklin, started the assault off and it just snowballed from there. "Her resonance had international range, from Sunset Boulevard in Atlanta to the rice patties of Saigon, from the tin-top roofs of Soweto to the bomb shelters of Baghdad, from the concert halls of Boston to the camps of Darfur."
Coretta Scott King was no shrinking violet and spoke her mind at all costs, including having her home bombed while her children slept. she would have been proud, Im sure. Greenfield, the sr political analyst on cnn was discussing the appropriateness of the political leaning of the funeral.
sort of ludicrous considering Ms. Scott King's strong political stands. These were people who loved her and would never do anything that would disrespect her spirit. they knew her well enough to know that that is what she would have wanted.
