So
yesterday was World AIDS day.
i was going to do a whole post about the stupidity of Reagan and the world's blindness and disinterest in AIDS in the 80's and early 90's.
but i decided that focusing on that would have taken away from the spirit of it.
Instead I decided to go back to what was done in those first years of World AIDS Day.
World AIDS Day was organized in 1988. In 1989 artists also dubbed it "A Day Without Art" and all over the world galleries shut their doors, theaters didn't perform, museums shrouded paintings in black.
It is one of the strongest memories I have of being a teenager.

When people started having websites, the idea was that you would black them out completely for 24 hours

Obviously AIDS was seen primarily as a 'gay disease'
then a disease affecting drug addicts.
It goes without saying that they were a few populations that the conservative and money driven could do without.
In the 80's excess, who wanted the homos and junkies downing their party with a fucking disease that they all deserve because they are not like us.

Artists wanted to remind people what the world would look like with out the contributions of gay people to the arts.
you can not deny that we represent when it comes to creativity.

so i went back to the old school way

use condoms people
